Default Outlook is not responding (and is slow)

Often when sending an email (click on SEND) nothing happens for a very long time and usually in the top of screen there is a display "Outlook is not responding". Mostly if I wait long enough (can be more than one minute even for a very short email) the message disappears and the email is sent.

Sometimes after waiting much more than a minute I give up and close down Outlook.
I am connected to my isp via ADSL2+ and use SMTP.
Could it be caused by the connection type, the isp server or something else?
