Default PC crash, OS reinstall... Is is all really gone?

Like the title stated to go into, big time crash. All kinds of corrupted stuff. Geek Squad (GS) was able to get it stared, backed up "user files" (not sure what that means) and re-installed the OS so back to square one. Several sub folders in the Personal Folders had lots of emails I was saving. Are they just simply gone or does OL 2003 make some sort of back up that someone might be able to tell me what to look for in the GS backup?
