Default Reminder not automatic in Outlook 2013

I'm using Outlook 2013. In File>Options>Calendar Options>Default Reminders>I have checked the box and set the global reminder to 1 day. However, when I add a new appointment by clicking on the day of the appointment and entering the details, I often forget to notice that the reminder is set to "none" when it should be set to "1 day." It causes me to miss appointments.
