Default Outlook 2010 Not responding after IMAP folder deletion or copying

I am having problems with Outlook freezing after attempts to either delete IMAP folders or copy them to and from the local Outlook account.
Whilst this is bad enough, after closing the program down and restarting it it then won't start and shows an error message saying it can't open the .PST file.

Last time this happened I allowed the program to run on in a "Not Responding" condition and eventually got a message saying the "IMAP server closed the connection".
When this has happened I've tried to repair the .pst file, tried launching Outlook in safe mode (outlook.exe /safe) with no luck.
In the end I've had to restore the whole machine from a disk image which I take every day in order to recover the situation which is really unacceptable.
There are two IMAP accounts configured along with a local Outlook account ( which is where I generally file everything ) plus local Archive folders
It is running on Windows 8.1 with Norton internet security but with the Norton Outlook add in disabled.
The file sizes are - Outlook.pst 330Mb / Archive.pst 28Mb and the two IMAP account .pst files are less than 35Mb each.
Anyone see similar issues ?
