Default Stuck in cycle of name/password dialogue box

I can't use outlook w/o having the user name/dialogue box come up over and over again. My ISP said it was a key logger- is that true? Checking other forums, removing this is very complex. could it be something else?

Who is your ISP?

Rogers is my ISP. When this happened before, they mentioned it was a key logger virus. do you agree? If so, it's very complicated to remove. Avira and Ad aware didn't ID it. But a free copy of Dr. Spyware (?) did but then I would have had to purchase it to remove it.

Do you think that's what it is?

I highly doubt that it's a keylogger. There are a multitude of potential reasons why it's not keeping your credentials.

Here are some different things to try, start with one and work your way down:

  1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290684 (*WARNING - Some of these fixes require registry edits. Make sure to follow the directions or you could seriously damage your computer.)
  2. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...word-on-vista/
  3. Delete the Outlook Profile, Restart PC, and create a new one. Sometimes that helps.
  4. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling outlook. *Make sure you back up your PST file just in case (Here's how: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070).

I tried the easiest thing first which was to create a new email acct. Followed instructions but it doesn't work because the dialogue box keeps on coming up. Further, am I supposed to delete the original acct because creating a new acct does it with the same email address, and then the same email problems with that dialogue box. Shd I go straight to registry?

Even though the new account does it with the same email. You have created a new profile since the original could of been corrupted.

I would just skip to the number 2 that I posted. At the howtogeek site. Ignore number 3 since that is what you just did. After step 2 move to 4.

Don't type it into your browser. You should paste it into windows explorer. Alternatively you could just browse to that location through windows explorer.

You might need to make sure you have hidden files showing.

Quote:
Windows Vista
Right Click Start
Select Explore
Select Organize
Select Folder and Search Options
Select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click yes to confirm that you really want to do this.
Click Apply
Click OK

Windows XP
Right Click Start.
Select Explore
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click yes to confirm that you really want to do this.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Default Extra info

BTW- if this helps and adds any info. I receive mail from two accounts via outlook. One is my regular account which is an smtp. broadband.rogers.com This is the problem acct.

The other account is mail.trustlearningsolutions.com this comes in through outlook as well.

does this help? It's the one through my ISP that is a problem. This happened two weeks ago as well. The ISP reset the password for me and all was fine for 2 weeks- now it's all starting up again.

Can you browse to that location?

Hit Start > Computer > C: > Users > %yourprofile% > appdata > roaming > microsoftprotect

Accounts are only POP or IMAP. SMTP is for outgoing mail and both (POP or IMAP) use SMTP.

If it worked and then didn't work, I would think it is a problem with your ISP and I would be calling them again to try and fix the problem.
