Default Outlook 2002 XP contacts problem

I have my contacts in alphabet order by last name. I thought I had all the correct entries BUT when I go to send a message and hit "To" and the contact list comes up - the names are in alphabet order by FIRST NAME. I want them in the same order by LAST NAME as they are in the contact list.
I wonder if I have missed something. Or did Microsoft update something and it caused this problem. I am not the only one with this problem so if I can get help to solve this - it will help others. Thanks for all your help in advance.
