I noticed that there was an update to office 2013 recently (about a week ago). Since that update I have noticed that:

1. Items in the Favorites view are intermittently removed
2. Sometimes the Folder view does not populate correctly

I have added the missing items back into the favorites view but they get removed again. This morning, when I started Outlook, there were no items in my Favorites view. I did not (knowingly) remove them.

On several occasions many folders under Inbox have been missing too. For this problem, when I restart Outlook it seems to fix the problem.

Is this a known problem?
