Default Email not functional, BCM not working

Let's deal with email first. I am using O/L 2010 to access and manage my Yahoo email account. About a week ago I realized my outgoing mail stopped working and I was getting a "0x800CCC80" error message; so I seearched for solutions and did all the reconfiguring that was called for (although my settings looked fine to begin with and my email ahd been working for two years) but no luck. So, I deleted my account in O/L , turned off the computer, turned it back on and created a new account, again checking all the configurations. Now, I can't receive or send from O/L. I'm to the point of uninstalling O/L and reinstalling it but before I do that, what am I missing? I have lots of contacts and email folders and I don't wantt o take a chance of loosing them.

FWIW, this is not my first O/L disappointment. Is there an alternative? I don;t mind paying a reasonable amount but I really want a stable email-contact manager for my business.
