its pretty much the same for gmail...
I checked Yahoo and all the messages were marked read. So I sent myself a message, exited Outlook, and checked the message on Yahoo via the web. It was not marked read. So I marked it read, closed the browser, and restarted Outlook. The message still downloaded even though I had marked it read on Yahoo. It may be that I'm not understanding well what you're saying, though.
