Default Unable to select text in email messages received or previously sent

Using Outlook 2007 on my Windows 7 computer that also has Word 2010 installed I have a problem with the text in emails that I have received or have previously sent. I am unable to select any text in such a message. If I place my mouse pointer over anything in the body text of the message, instead of getting a selection cursor I see a hand icon that normally shows that the mouse cursor is on top of a link. When I click the left mouse button the fingers on the hand wave but nothing else happens. The only way I can select text is to select the entire message (Ctrl + A), copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl + C), paste it into a blank Word document, and then select the individual text I want. That didn't used to happen but it does now. I have no idea when the change occurred.
