clicking on email link gets request to install outlook
um...what I said....
Here's the problem as relayed to me in an email about a site I run: When I click on the email link, my computer wants me to install MS Outlook; when this person clicks on it, apparently her computer (or the link, - or ???) wants her to use MSN. In other words, these people cannot click on an email link in the site and thus send an email. I'm guessing it's something like their installed email programs (dunno what) need to be made the default. Or something. Anyone know just what this is actually? Thanks |

Set Email Default
denno,
The users would have to set the default email program to something else. In Internet Explorer to to Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab > Set programs > Set your default programs - then they just choose from the list - if Outlook is the Default they click on Outlook and change its behavior. Hope this is helpful. |

Thanks. Following is what one of the people with the problem had to say
Apparently that wasn't the nature of her difficulty. I'm trying to think if there is some kind of Outlook-promoting mini-application that can be uninstalled, if it isn't a setting within Outlook? This is what I find when I select Tools in Internet Explorer: Tools>Internet Options>Programs There is no option listed as "Set Programs", but there is a list where you can specify which program Windows automatically uses for each Internet service: HTML Editor, E-mail, Newsgroups, etc. I already have Outlook Express selected as the default program for my e-mail , so I have no idea why Outlook is trying to barge in. I thought that maybe since I still have Internet Explorer 6 on this computer it would help if I upgraded to a newer version, but I don't think it would make any difference - I have IE 7 on my laptop, and I get the same drop down menu there as I do on my desktop with IE 6. And in any case, why would this other person who emailed me be having trouble with MSN? |

More info from that lady having the problem:
What I get when I click on the Email link is the a window instructing me to install Outlook - a standard Microsoft window that says in big letters at the top: Outlook 2007 Startup then in smaller font: Welcome to the Outlook 2007 Startup Wizard, which will guide you through the process of configuring Outlook 2007. Near as I can tell, I have 2 options here: Install Outlook, or close out of this window and send whatever email I want using my ordinary address book.(which is what I do.) As for what you told CarolLynn, I do have Outlook Express selected as my default email program (and have always had Outlook Express designated as such) - Outlook just seems to think I should use it instead! |
