Default Outlook 2010 Search Folder

In Outlook 2010 when I use the instant search box to search for items that are expiring (expiring:anytime) I get a list of everything in my mailbox (we have retention policies set to expire everything after 6 months).

If I try to set a search folder to search for the same thing, nothing shows up in the search folder.

Does anyone else see the same behavior or have a suggestion to make this work correctly in a search folder?
