Default Which .pst is the correct .pst

I seem to have an embedded .pst within a larger .pst. Let me explain.
I have a .pst file called: brent.pst which is 8.4GB. I am preparing to move to an new computer and want to cut back on the size. I archived a bunch of old stuff. After I was done, I highlighted the file name in the Mail Folder column to check its properties. I had reduced the sized to 1.6GB. Great!! But when I checked the size of brent.pst using WE the file size for brent.pst is still 8.4GB.

Upon closer review, the file showing as being open in Outlook is actually called brent-pst and not brent and when I check the file location for brent-pst sure enough it shows it being located in folder call brent.pst.

Can I have a folder call brent.pst and can brent.pst contain brent-pst.pst plus what must be about 6 or 7 GB of stuff? I ran scanpst.exe on teh file and it said it fixed errors but this issue still exists.

Any help would be appeciated.

Brent

Ok so I've since done some more investigation. I created a new personal folder called billPFF2012 and the system created a file called billPFF2012.pst. Wonderful.

I went into Outlook and opened this new .pst folder and in Outlook it was not called billPFF2012 but Personal Folders. This would explain above why when opened brent.pst the file name that appeared was brent-pst. Somewhere another name was assigned. But still brent.pst was still 8.4GB in size.

I opened brent.pst (which opened as brent-pst) and drug and dropped all of the sub folders into my newly created Personal Folders (aka billPFF2012). Much to my pleasure, after having moved all the sub folders out of brent-pst, the new folders are 1.6GB. A properties check on Personal Folders and billPFF2012 reveal file sizes roughly the same.

What is now odd however, is even after moving all of the subfolders brent.pst is still 8.4GB.

I am hoping someone can explain to me what is going on.

Thanks.
