Default Outlook 2010 Will Not Send E-Mails To Certain Users

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure what I did to my Outlook 2010. I made a change to the Outlook Address Book, in an attempt to clear the E-Mail Auto Complete (I have since learned where that option is).

For certain e-mail address, Outlook 2010 seems to remove the e-mail address and immediately bounces it with the error:

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

() on 3/15/2012 10:59 AM
None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient.

Even though I type in an e-mail address, Outlook removes it or refuses to send it. Crazy!

There is no MS Exchange server involved here, this is purely Internet e-mail with POP/SMTP connections.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help. I'm stumped!
John

Is this error only from certain outlook users to all email destinations you try or only certain destinations? Try this first. Click "Resend This Message", double click the email address, click on the "Internet Type" button and change the type to SMTP. This can happen if your custom address type for an address is switched to mailto instead of smtp (which could be a result of copy-paste the address instead of typing it when you enter it into the address book initially, however I was under the impression this had been fixed in 2010).

Thanks for the response. The e-mail never leaves Outlook. The moment I hit send, bam, I get an undeliverable from System Administrator. This happens when I use an e-mail address that I type in manual or use from the cached e-mail addresses. For example, if I attempt to send to rberry@cadcourse.com, ehhhhhhh. If I make it a contact and select it from contacts. No problem. I did "screw up" my Address Book lookups in a stupid attempt by me to clear the cached e-mail addresses for the auto-complete function. Dumb. Since then, this behavior is very strange. There are times that the e-mail address that I enter is actually removed and the e-mail address is "()". I've been working on this for weeks with no success. Thanks for all the help!

Try these steps.
First, reset the auto-cache following this method even if you already have:
1.Close Outlook, go to Start > Run > type "outlook.exe /cleanautocompletecache" and hit Enter. On Outlook startup, choose your Exchange profile. It will be loaded without cached entries.

Then, follow these steps to fix the emails that don't work:

The culprit I believe is the "mailto:" tags that are part of your contact's addresses. Clearing the autocomplete and making sure they are set to smtp instead of mailto should resolve this for any contacts you have or things you type not immediately failing. If this doesn't work we may have to come at it from another angle.

Thanks for all the excellent advise. I completed all of the steps. Still having a problem with my rberry@cadcourse.com. Even though I've created a contact for this e-mail address and use it in the e-mail, still the same result (below), sorry. None of my e-mail addresses use the mailto: prefix, just the straight emailaddress@domain.com.

Boy, this is so odd! Thanks for your help! All my best,
John

Just because it doesn't show mailto: doesn't mean the internet type is set to smtp. But if that isn't the issue I have some more questions to narrow this down.
1. Is it just this address or several that give this error?
2. What percentage of emails that you try have this error?
3. What is the primary smtp server and port you are using in your outlook settings?
4. Can you use IMAP instead of POP with your internet email?
5. Can you set up a gmail account and see if you have the same issue with the same addresses?

Oh, that's a good point. I checked the Outlook properties on the e-mail and looked for the mailto prefix. I'll reread your prior post and see if that is the problem, it might be.

Thanks for hanging in there with me on this. It is about 5% of e-mail addresses that fail. I cannot seem to ascertain a pattern. My Outlook is configured for 8 different e-mail addresses using 1and1, Verizon and a few other e-mail servers. No problems with send receive at all.

I've used IMAP before, ummmmmmm, don't quite like the way it works. So I stayed with POP3/SMTP. I'll keep plugging at this and see if I can figure out a pattern. As a young person I wrote software, so I'm pretty good at figuring out software patterns. I'll give it a go!

Thank you SO MUCH for all of your kind help and terrific assistance. I greatly appreciate talking with such knowledgeable people like you! I am running Office in 32bit mode, as it was recommend for compatibility with plugin's and add-ons. I wasn't sure if 64bit would provide anything other than large data set handling. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help! With all my best,
John

Ok sorry If I start to get redundant but I'm trying to step through this in my head.
1. If you start to type an address and it autocompletes, do those fail consistently for the same contacts or is it random?
2. Does it also happen on addresses that don't autocomplete?

All of a sudden outlook send an error message from system administrator saying user not found. This comes back in microsec so it never rteally left outlook.

Have another email on same server that works OK. no problem.

Have tried for 3 weeeks. Restore to factory setting, installed outlook, copied PST from before restore.

Tried both inputting from old pst and generated a new pst but same results.
Same results.

Checked all POP SMTP settings between the two they are identical.
