Default Outlook requests password afeter changing windows password

hi,

I've got a windows xp inside a company domain, and I have no problems configuring my email accounts in outlook 2012.
But when I change my windows' password, then Outlook asks me for the email password.
It only happens when I change the windows password.

¿Does outlook use windows credentials for anything? ¿any idea why it asks for my windows password?

thanks

Answer to your second question is yes, some people in a domain set their login credentials for windows to authenticate their email in outlook because they are the same, so that when a user logs in and opens outlook it is automatically the outlook of whichever windows user has logged in. This is instead of storing your authentication in outlook settings. If your company uses an exchange server to do email then this would be the ideal way to set it up. If not try this(may be different for 2012 but same basic principle):

Dave's Answer:

Select Tools -> E-mail
Accounts menu option. (depending on your version of Outlook this option might be found under Tools -> Options -> Mail

Setup tab -> E-mail Accounts button)
  1. The "View or change existing e-mail accounts" item should be already selected. Click "Next".
  2. Select the account you want to modify and click "Change".
  3. In the next screen, click "Remember password" in the "Logon Information" section in the lower left corner.
  4. Then click "Next" or "OK" as necessary to confirm.

We don't use an Exchange Server. Moreover, the email account in outlook is set up using the "remember password" option.
The thing is that both passwords (windows and email) are different, and outlook is well configured with the email password, but when the user changes the password in his windows account, outlook asks for the email password, and there shouldn't be any relation between them.

I wonder if Outlook does this like a protection, so if somebody knows your windows password and changes it, Outlook avoids that person from accessing your email without typing the email password. This is just a guess.

Thanks for replying.

Which password is it accepting when this prompt comes up? Your windows login or you email authentication? If it is accepting your windows login make sure you don't have an exchange account set up that you aren't using . Also did it ask you just the once, when you reset your windows password or is it every time you restart or log out that the prompt returns when you open outlook? I don't think the domain server will force you to re-enter your outlook info by default or any regular setting, as I cannot recreate your situation but I know there are scripts that can be run to force OWA to prompt user for password change which could also do this to your outlook.

I guess it depends on how you changed your windows password, was it something the domain forced you to do after a set time or did your IT go in and say user must changed password on next login?

It accepts the email password. And it asks for it since you change windows password. so, if you change it, and then you try to send an email, outlook asks for it.

The passwords are changed when the domain asks for it. 90 days after the last password change, the server warns you to change it again.

So after the last change, you entered your email password and it works until the next change? Or, is it more frequently than just one time after the windows password is changed every 90 days?

It may be part of a script they have set up to run when it asks you to reset your windows password, can you ask your IT if this is the case before you try anything else? We really don't want to go further if they have it set this way for a reason. They might want to try the steps below if they don't have a script that reprompts for you email authentication (kind of like what you thought earlier).

If not:
If Outlook asks you to enter your password every time you check mail although you have Remember password set for the account, wrong settings for the "Protected Storage System Provider" might be the cause. Read through this whole article and make sure you understand it before making any changes to registry as it eventually suggests.
