Default Cannot open Outlook

Cannot open Outlook - Win 7 64 bit, Outlook 2007. Been running for years without problems. Yesterday (no changes to anything) got this message trying to open Outlook on PC1: "Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if the condition persists." Using gmail. (No problems with PC2 (wireless)). PC1 (wired) will open Outlook in safe mode. Using Verizon FIOS. Was online with Verizon support for a long while. He says problem is with Outlook. Have tried everything I could find on the net. Tried a new profile, still get error. Tried Office repair, etc. On Tools/Accounts/ran repair = no problems, goes to successful completion on three gmail accounts. Have not made any changes, updates, etc. before this happened.Opened OK, the next time I tried to open got the error and I cannot fix it. Any help greatly appreciated.
