Default sharing Notes between PC and MAC

Hi
I am a University Professor and use OneNote to share notes between myself and my students. PC to PC, no problem. I export my Notes as either a .one file or a OneNote Package and my students are able to open them and store them locally on their computers.
My problem is PC to MAC. Trying to do the same thing, my students using MAC's get a message "Unable to Open File" when trying to use OneNote for MAC 2016. Searching the web, the only solution I can find is by sharing the Notebook using OneDrive. For a lot of reasons (the main one is I don't want my students to be able to edit the NoteBook)this simply isn't acceptable.

Is there a method I could save the file in a format compatible with MAC?

Is there a setting I could tell my students to change in the MAC version?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

SLL
