Default Office 2003 saving as a pdf but not

Somehow I have managed to get something really messed up. My Office Word 2003 is saving all my files as some sort of Adobe file. When I try to open those files they won't open because they aren't adobe files. When I click on one of the files in the open file window it opens Adobe reader and gives me a message that it can't read the file.

That was yesterday

Today, I can open the files menu go to the folder where I saved the files I had created and all files have an Adobe symbol. I click on it and it opens in Office just fine. So problem solved? Not really. Why do I still have these Adobe symbols on the files and when am I not going to be able to open them again. Most important, I do I fix this?

Hi
This appears to be an issue with file association. See the link below to resolve:

Good luck.

First, this link covers file associations in XP not Vista

Second, my problem is Word 2003 is SAVING it's doc files as .pdf with the Adobe loga for its icon. Obviously it should NOT do this. There must be a setting somewhere that controls how Office 2003 saves the file wouldn't you think If so, where and how do I change it?

The implication from your first post is that you've somehow managed to mess up your PC's file associations, so that it has .doc files associated with Adobe Acrobat. The advice in the link in OTPM's post might therefore be relevant. If it doesn't solve the problem, you could try repairing your Office installation (Help|Detect & Repair).
