Default file format converters for 2000

I am running Office 2000 on Win 7.

I have downloaded the File Format Converters to allow me to open *.pptx etc. The install seemed to go OK, and I can see Compatibility Pack for Office 2007 in the list of installed programs.
But .pptx is not mentioned in the Open Filetype Filter and launching PPT from the file gets "Unable to open file".
Then Windows Update starts sending me updates for Office 2007, which I don't have.

Any idea what has gone wrong?
