Default Excel 2003 / 2007 files saving slow on Win 2003 Server

I have a few Excel 2007 files (approx 1 MByte in size) which are stored on a network share on a Windows 2003 Server. The server is a domain controller.

From within Excel, from any client computer, and also locally on the server, the files used to save within 2 or 3 seconds. "From within Excel" means I open the file with Excel, then save it. Client computers all use Windows XP.

Since about two weeks, it now takes 60 - 90 seconds to save the same file. The file itself has not changed.

The slow save time is the same whether I save it from a client workstation or directly (locally) on the server. So it is not a network issue.

If I put that file on a file share of a Windows XP computer, we are back to the 2 seconds file save time.
Other Office documents also save slowly.
Seems to be no problem with other apps.
So I am not sure if the problem comes from MS Office or from the server. Seems to be that specific combination - Office and Win2003 server - but it is only this specific server. I put it onto another Win 2003 server (the 2nd domain controller), and it is fast file save. Back to the other server - again 60-90 seconds.

I tried also to create another new file share and put the file there - to no avail.
Changing the file type to Office 2003 helps nothing.
Disabling antivirus, both on server and client stations, helped nothing.
Repeated restarts helped nothing.

Noteworthy is also that this affects any Excel file now on the server. It is not at all linked to this specific workbook. Any type of workbook too, with or without macros, with or without external links.

It also does not matter if I use Excel 2000, 2003 or 2007 to open and save the file. Same lack of speed. And same return of speed when opening the file from an XP share.

It's only saving within Excel which is so slow. I see no issue with other apps, so it seems to be an Office problem, or a problem of Windows Server 2003 / Office combination.

Any ideas?
