Default Fonts converting over operating systems

This may be beyond the scope of this forum, but I thought I'd give it a try:

When developing software UI in operating system Windows XP or Windows 7, what fonts work best when converting to Linux system? That is what fonts maintain size and general appearance best?

We have product in both systems and need a font to work across the operating systems.

Thanks!
