Default error: You are attempting to save a file format that is blocked by file block setting

I installed Office 2010 on my WinXP and everything worked fine for a while. When the problem described herein started, I used the trust center to allow open and save to everything imaginable. Yet I am not able to SAVE any file in any file format, not .doc, not .docx, nothing. The error message is:
You are attempting to save a file format that is blocked by file block setting in your trust center
But this is not true!

I uninstalled and re-installed office, I cleaned the registry, nothing helped.
Note that this is a consumer machine, no network policy!
Please help as the product is virtually useless

Somebody suggested the obvious, to go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922850
to which I replied:
This was the obvious thing to do and I followed all the possible suggestions. The results went between just-did-not-help (I checked all the trust center options to no avail and added my trusted directories with same dismal results) to incomprehensible - Microsoft is talking about the OCT tool which is for administrators (well I am an administrator on my machine) but then it tells you to run some setup.exe (sic) with the /admin parameter from the installation point of the specific product ( what does that mean ????). I tried to run the setup that is available in the 1033 directory from several directories, but all I get is the useless advice to go to control panel.
Obviously, something got corrupted on my machine, but I really do not want to reformat and re-install Windows if I could do something less drastic.
This particular KB article is a prime example of a Microsoft accurate but useless KB article
Thanks
Z. Atlas

Hi Zatlas1,

It would appear you've posted the same question in at least three forums (this one, the one referenced above where "Somebody suggested the obvious" and social.technet.microsoft.com)

For cross-posting etiquette, please see: http://www.excelguru.ca/node/7

Did you do follow the link from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922850 to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922849 and check whether the advice there applies?

I was not aware about the etiquette but I apologize and promise that from now on I will adhere to that policy. I will concentrate in this forum only from now on as this appears to be the most appropriate. It was the first time I was trying to get help!

As for the issue itself: I said clearly that, yes indeed I visited the appropriate KB's and followed all the advices there. This effort was useless as no advice in those KB's did anything. And the advice about using some network policies is a) not applicable and b) incomprehensible to people who are NOT administrators.

Obviously, there is some corruption in my system, maybe in the registry. Is there a way to actually reset everything to the standard home (NO NETWORK POLICY) setting, so that I could save files as usual. I do not wish to reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows just because one entry in the registry got corrupted.

One important note, my problem is SAVING the files, not OPENING them. So besides the fact that there are file formats that inherently may not be saved, I explained that I am not even able to save native Word 2010 docx. That means that there is indeed a corruption, not mere need to fidle with the settings.

Thanks
ZA

Hi Zatlas1,

The second of those links says Word 2010 cannot save files in the:
Microsoft Word 6.0 Binary Documents and Templates
Microsoft Word 95 Binary Documents and Templates
If the document you're trying to save was created in one of those formats (or an even earlier one), that could be the cause of the problem. If that isn't the case (and I accept that docx is a valid Word 2010 format) and the problems persist, try the approaches suggested here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...artingWord.htm and
http://lounge.windowssecrets.com/ind...owtopic=197827
for various series of troubleshooting steps that will help you track down (and hopefully solve) the problem.

Thank you all
Macropod, your suggestion to look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541 actually solved the problem. It was not any of the keys that they mention there but the key about blocked files under security. Once that was removed, Word works like a charm

Default Undoing MS Office 2003 file blocks

The MS Support article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810 has some useful info on undoing the blocking of various file formats in Office 2003 programs (open and save) by updating the registry settings. They worked for me!

Hello, I am hoping you can help. I have the EXACT same problem that you did with saving in Word 2010 that I just installed. I tried to use the link that helped you but I can't seem to locate how to fix it. Do you remember what you did? Thanks!!

I had the same problem appear after the most recent Office update - what a pain!

My resolution was similar to zatlas1: I went in to the Registry and edited:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\E xcel\Security\FileBlock
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\E xcel\Security\ProtectedView

I deleted alll the entries in the above two registry folders which cleared all the current settings for File Block Settings. It worked and now I can once again save and open Excel files of any kind in Excel as normal.

I'd just like to thank you for this. I had the exact same issue and this worked perfectly.
