Default Icon issue with Office 2000 data files

Problem: we have one XP machine (in a domain) running Office 2000 that refuses to assign correct Office icons to anything but newly-created files. Any data files (*.doc, *.xls, *.ppt, etc.) that were existing show up in explorer with generic icons, whereas any new files get correct icons. This does NOT include the application icons. I already tried a couple of scripts that deal with the "program icons" and they didn't fix this issue.

This issue started after we discovered two different versions of Office were trying to live on the same machine. Everything was uninstalled and then Office 2000 was reinstalled. Everything is fully updated.

Thanks in advance for any insights!
