Default Preventing word/excel from trying to open external template locations

Hi all,

I have a problem whereby when my users try to open certain word and excel douments recieved from external sources that have been created/saved with an external template location i.e. \\someone-elses-server\not-reachable. Word/Excel 2003 seem to freeze and crash.

I use office 2007 (users are still on office 2003) and can press esc to stop the look-up of these external templates and then point the template location to our standard normal.dot and send onto users who can then open.

I have looked about and can't find what I think should be an option somewhere to "prevent looking up external template locations" and maybe even "default to normal.dot"... Any ideas?

Many thanks
Phil
