Default Remove Office XP entirely - registry?

Hi,

I need some expert advice. I've successfully removed Office XP Pro w/ Frontpage while still not activated and not in reduced mode. I've recently had Win XP SP3 installed and want to install Office Pro 2010 on a clean system and therefore remove anything Office XP.

I've done loads of research and it often says to rename/delete registry keys. I know where to find them but don't want to damage my system. Someone advised me to leave them alone, especially because the latter two (see below) are essential for Windows and would damage the system if altered, so now I'm confused.

Is it safe to rename/delete the following?

HKEY_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/"Office"
HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/"Office"

HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/"Shared Tools"
HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/"Shared Tools Location"

Not sure why shared tools.

I'd be very grateful for advice.

Thank you!

B

Hi BridgeJ,

You don't need to do anything with those keys. In fact, you didn't even need to uninstall Office 2003 - the Office 2010 installer will do that for you. Plus, there are advantages in leaving the former registry entries intact. Primary amongst these is that the Office 2010 can use them to pick up how you previously had your Office apps configured.

If you really want to clear out Office 2003's registry entries, try a product like CCleaner.
