Default installation questions, can you help?

I'd appreciate answers to these two questions. Am I correct that the disk Office 2010 pack permits installation in three computers? I just learned that the Office 2007 I bought when I purchasedmy desktop computer was restricted to one computer and I couldn't put O-2007 on my laptop. I guess Gates needs the money. Secondly, if I install 2010 will it pick up all the files now in O-2007 and can I then uninstall O-2007?

Since you've posted your notice of departure, you may not read this. Hopefully it will be of some benefit to someone else. By the way, patience is a virtue.

There are two things to consider when it comes to Office licensing and multiple computers. One is the version of Office, and the other is the devices you are installing on.

Office Home and Student (both 2007 and 2010) is licensed to install on up to 3 computers as long as they are being used for personal (e.g. non-business) purposes. This is likely where the 3-computer reference came from.

All other retail versions of Office may be installed on one primary device and one portable device, so long as both devices belong to and are used by the same individual. A laptop counts as a portable device, so under these guidelines you could install the same copy on both your desktop computer and your laptop computer. These guidelines are spelled out in the Installation and Use Rights section of the End User License Agreement.

Volume licensing works differently, and I am unsure whether a separate license is required for a portable device if the owner also had a license installed on a desktop.

Hi Kaneto,

Another variant is the OEM installation. These come pre-installed on the PC and cannot be installed on another PC.

Default Thanks

I appreciate taking the time to reply. Thank you. It seems an OEM Office is good only for one computer, even if it comes with disk. Something I didn't know. I could have skipped paying $119 for OEM Office to HP and instead bought office for $125 from Amazon and had 3 installations. Maybe Open Office, which has good reviews and costs nothing, is the way to go. Thanks again

True, I forgot about OEM licensing, which can only be installed on one computer and cannot even be removed and transferred to another computer.

OpenOffice is a good alternative if you're writing documents for yourself, for printing, or for sharing with other OpenOffice users. There are some issues with compatibility between OO and MS Office. OO is able to save in MS Office format, and is able to open most (but not all) MS Office docs, but a lot of formatting tends to get lost in the conversion from one to the other. Just something to keep in mind.
