Default Building blocks in 2007

Where are the building blocks stored? I looked in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Document Parts\1033
and
C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033

Both files are dot files and when I open them they are empty. Is there a special way to open dot files? Where are my quick parts coming from?

The dotx file that stores built-in building blocks isn't empty. There is no text to read, and there is no user interface that I know of to allow you to view the content, but it is there. It is the file at the first path you listed.

Custom building blocks can be saved in any Word template that is .dotx or .dotx. But that 2nd path you listed is available as a save location for custom building blocks that you want to be available globally.

I don't know of a way to actually see anything in these files as they don't contain text.

Thanks. I have created a Word document with macros and quick parts. I now want to share this document with my department. I tried to save it as a macro enabled word template, but when I send it to someone and put the macro in the appdata folder,as Help instructs, there is an error when the macro is run. The debug highlights the line in the macro that is calling the quickpart. I assumed it couldn't find it so I shipped the macro enabled Word document, but since I couldn't read the building block, I didn't try to send it. If I place the building block doc inthe correct folder on their pc,will quick parts work for them?

If you only need the building blocks to be available to docs from this template, then the simplest thing is to save the building blocks in the template. Since you already have the template made, and already have the building block made, you can open the template, then go to the Building blocks Organizer, and edit the properties of the building block so it is saved in your template.

You might have to edit the macro now that the building block is moved. I don't know.

I can't get this to work, so if you can indulge me with some more detailed instructions I'd appreciate it. I created the macro template with macros and quick parts at work. I saved it as a Word Macro Template to a thumb drive. But when I open it at home, there are no quick parts.

Am I misunderstanding the way this works that a macro template somehow includes the quick parts, in addition to macros?

Don't "open" the template.

Also, it has to be installed on the machine.... saved as a macro-enabled template to the Templates folder. In Vista, in the Save As dialog box, look under Favorite Links for Templates folder, or in the left pane very near the top, look for the Templates folder. I think the path is C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Then create a new document based on the template.

Office button > New > Under templates, My Templates. Select your template. Make sure 'Create New' is set to "Document" and click OK.

It has occurred to me that you might have an additional misunderstanding... After you create the template, be sure to add the quick parts to their galleries, taking care to save them to the .dotm you're working in.

To re-cap...

Save your file as a .dotm. So that you can use it on the current machine, save it to the Templates folder.

Add or create the items in this file (add pictures, create tables, headers, etc.) Then save these to their respective galleries, choosing to save to the .dotm file you are in. If I were you, I would at this time create custom categories for the custom parts. I like to name my categories beginning with @ or A so they sort at the top of the galleries. Please see the attached graphic "Template1".

You can then delete the parts that are displayed in the file if you want.
Save and close the file.

On any computer that wants to use this template, save the template to the Templates folder.

When you create a new document based on this template, the quick parts galleries will be automatically populated with your custom parts. See attached graphic "DocFromTemplate".

Don't forget, to use the template, don't open it, instead you should create a new document based on it.
