Office 365 modules repeatedly, consistently corrupted
Office 365/Windows 10.0.18363 Build 18363 (I updated the preceding profile after I posted)
Approximately every one to three months Outlook/Word/Excel will not load and I have to reinstall. This time, Excel still loads with Outlook and Word failing. Although MS has made the reinstall (uninstall, modify, 2nd option) a breeze, I'd rather not. I cannot believe that I'm the only lucky one to have this reoccurring problem. Any clues as to the cause of the corrupting influence? Mark |

There are many possibilities, including malware/viruses. Assuming you've got that covered, I suggest running:
• the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool, then the System File Checker (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...upted-system); and • Windows 7 Disk Check (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...s-in-windows-7)

If I'm not mistaken, running the suggested diagnostics is to repair an already corrupted file(s).
I looked at DISM and determined it's far easier and quicker just to reinstall. I'm thoroughly protected against and check daily for malware. I do not 'clean' the registry. I was hoping that others had reported a similar problem over the years with several potential culprits. I guess not. Thanks anyway. Mark |

Reinstall Windows and all your Apps & data? I think not.

I also stayed clear of DISM because of the MS warnings associated. It seemed that MS intended the tool to be used by admins who *really knew what they were doing vs. someone like myself. No?
As for the reinstall, I think we're talking two different ideas. I'm referring to Setting/Uninstall/Modify/second of two 'repairs' that appears to download Office and start fresh. No? |

Well, as I've already said, DSIM & SFC are for checking your system, so no matter how many times you repair/reinstall Office, that's not going to remedy any underlying system problem - only something that addresses a system problem will do that.

Well it took a bit but I eventually got your point.
DISM ran successfully. sfc /scannow found corrupt files it could not fix. Per the following: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. And here's where I'm stuck. Above says repair details are included in the log. I guess they are but I sure can't find them? And I cannot distinguish if I'm supposed to do an 'online' repair or an 'offline' repair? I tried to upload the CBS.log file that I copied to and saved as a .txt file but it's too large for the forum: CBS_log.txt: Your file of 458.2 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 100.0 KB for this filetype. I'm stuck. Mark |

Did you ensure all apps were closed before running the System File Checker? Regardless, any repairs undertaken by the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool & System File Checker may already have resolved the Office problems.
As for the SFC log file, IIRC the files it couldn't restore have entries with text along the lines of: 'unable to restore' Remember, too, to do the Windows 7 Disk Check.

Oops. I know better. I did have 3 programs open.
I'll rerun DISM with a clean desk. You mention Win7 but I'm Win10. "....the files it couldn't restore have entries with text along the lines of: 'unable to restore'..." But how do I *specifically restore just those files? |

Assuming you did, if they're files for installed devices, screen drivers, etc, simply installing the latest updates of those, or uninstalling/reinstalling should take care of that. For any other files, the process is retlatively technical. You'd need to: • take ownership of the corrupted files; • open the install.wim file with DISM (or you could use a 3rd-party app WinZip or 7-zip) • copy the files from install.wim to the relevant folder (probably the winsxs folder), overwriting the corrupted copies; then • restore ownership of the files to NT Service\TrustedInstaller.

Yes, I ran DISM with the /RestoreHealth switch.
I reran DISM this time with all programs closed. As before, it ran successfully. After again running sfc /scannow, I searched the log for 'corrupt'. All the instances of file corruption that could not be repaired were fragments of a long ago, unintentional install of Avast (at the time, once I realized the presence of Avast and uninstalled the program, a large amount of the software remained. I then installed Avast's tool to remove all and thought it had--apparently not). I'll come back and let you know if the Office problem continues. Thanks again, Mark |
