Is my Office 'activated' or not?
After years of use, my MS-Office 2013 suddenly claimed to be not yet activated and threatened to stop working. I tried to activate it, but this proved impossible. (First it was 'this code is already registered, then 'not a valide product code'.) However, my fiddling must have helped somewhat as next day everything seemed alright again: no error messages when starting any Office application and when clicking 'Account' I see the reassuring text 'Product Activated'. Yet I fear not everything is right. When clicking 'Additional licence data' I DO get a warning against an alarmingly pink background: 'Activation required'. So: is my Office safe or not? Mabel |

Step 1: Sign in with the right account Please try signing in using all your personal email addresses in case you bought Office using a different email address. If you're at work or school, you may need to log in using your work or school account instead of your personal email account. To check if your Microsoft account is associated with Office, sign in to Services & subscriptions. Your Office product or Office 365 subscription should be listed there. If it's not, your email address won't work for signing in to Office. Step 2: Check for multiple copies of Office Activation can fail if you have multiple copies of Office installed. Let's uninstall any versions of Office you aren't using before we continue to troubleshoot. 1. Open Control Panel using the steps below for your operating system: o Windows 10 On the Windows 10 task bar, type Control Panel in the Type here to search box, select Control Panel in the search results, and then select Programs and Features. o Windows 8.1 or 8 Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner), select Control Panel, and then select Programs and Features. o Windows 7 Click Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program. 2. In the Search Programs and Features box (upper-right corner) of Programs and Features, search for the word office. You might see multiple versions installed, like this: 1. If more than one version appears, right-click the version you aren't using and select Uninstall. If only one version is listed, you can go to Step 3: Check your Office 365 subscription status. 2. When the uninstall is finished, restart your computer. 3. Open an Office app and sign in, if prompted. 4. If Office still won't activate, try running an online repair as described in Repair an Office application to fix up the remaining install of Office. If you still can't activate, proceed to the next step. Step 3: Check your Office 365 subscription status If you have an Office 365 for home subscription, let's make sure it's still active and renew your subscription, if necessary. If you don't have Office 365, you can skip to Step 4: Troubleshoot Office activation. Close all Office apps. Go to your Services & subscriptions page. If prompted, choose Sign in and enter the Microsoft account email and password associated with your Office 365 subscription. Review the details under the Subscriptions heading or Cancelled subscriptions heading. Shows an Office 365 subscription that has expired If your subscription has expired, you can renew it by following the steps in Renew Office 365 for home. After you renew your subscription, you can restart your Office apps as needed. If Office still won't activate, continue to the next step Step 4: Troubleshoot Office activation Select your version of Office for troubleshooting steps: Office 365 Office 2019 and Office 2016 Office 2013. Thanks for the elaborate answer. It doesn't really help me.
1. "If Office activation fails, you'll see Unlicensed Product or Non-commercial use / Unlicensed Product in the title bar of your Office apps". Did you really read my posting? I see no such thing in my title bar! 2. I won't "sign-in", never have, never will. Didn't buy Office 'using an email-address', just used my bank account. 3. I may indeed have 'multiple copies' of MS-Office 2013 installed. I can see two entries exactly the same: 'Microsoft Office professional Plus 2013'. Please tell me: how can I tell which one 'I don't use'? 4. Your "Step 3: Check your Office 365 subscription status" is beside the point; I have no subscription to MS-Office 365. Mabel |

Office 2011 for Mac "activation" problem
I have a similar problem. Following recent purchase, Office 2011 for Mac (Word, Excel, Powerpoint in particular) repeatedly but not after every load or usage, puts up dialogue box asking for the product key. I can enter the 25-character key now or 'later' (the latter tells me I've activated the product even though the sequence will be repeated), but, as ever, "the activation server is temporarily unavailable".
The product still has at least one of its original five licenses, the product key is correct, the product runs as expected, but the activation nuisance persists. Anybody found a work-around for it ? |

Did you buy one time Microsoft Office license or is it a cracked version?

It was a second-hand online purchase with at least one (probably four) unused licenses.

Just Call MS and give them the old code and tell them you are getting the error The key already registered, tell them you just reinstalled the OS and they would take care of the issue. |

Elsewhere you will find a thread from me on contacting Microsoft UK (--> US) without using voice calls. Deafness makes voice calls very difficult for me, an online chat window being the best option.

A "solution" which worked for Office for Mac 2011 was to register for an Office 365 account (see separate thread referring to Office 2010 for Windows), which enabled me to run and save in Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) applications which had been enforced read-only.
