Default Back Up in Word 365

Okay, raw newbie here, so apologies if it is a daft question.

I lost a lot of work and time using AutoSave on OneDrive. I foolishly assumed AutoSave automatically saved the file on the desktop, as well as the OneDrive back up copy. After several grazing edits (creating fresh copy files on each occasion) I was horrified to note that the original, source, file on the desktop had not been updated - the updates were there for sure, but spread out over eight back up files; on a m.s. of 100k it would have been all but impossible to find all the edits and manually update the original file.

My mistake, but one I want to avoid in the future.

So, how do I back up word files on the desktop of my laptop. Don't want to use OneDrive as this clearly leaves the source file untouched (and I do not want to work entirely on the internet as signal here is not good). Tried copying my source file to OneDrive, but it simply shoots off leaving me without my original file (and is the devil's own job to get back).

Simply want to automatically create a back up copy, preferably a fresh one for each session, to another location, probably an SD drive, that can be referred to later, and still go in to the source file on my desktop for further work and find it has been updated. It was possible in OpenOffice and I am sure is in Word, but everything I read directs me to using OneDrive.

Very many thanks, gmayor. I was sure it would be possible (and am grateful that someone replied!)
