Default Office 2010 Pro No Longer Activated - what choices are there?

I have a (July 2017) Microsoft Surface Book with Office 2010 Pro installed. Everything was working fine for several months until my Office 2010 suite somehow decided recently that it was not activated any more. I have tried to re-activate it on-line but that failed and telephone activation is no longer available. This leaves me with some questions.

1.. Is there any way to get rid of the RED bar that is now showing on the title bar of every Office app that I open?

2.. Using my Valid KEY, I downloaded the software file for re-installing Office 2010. If question 1 cannot be resolved, should I uninstall the existing Office before installing again using the downloaded file? Will doing this screw up my Outlook settings and contacts…I have backup copies of my archive and outlook pst files.

2.. Can I install from the downloaded file without uninstalling the original Office first.

According to MS, online & telephone activation of Office 2010 is still supported. See: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...7-f57f5a140f46

Re 1: I don't know what red bar you're referring to; I can't recall ever seeing it.
Re 2: Uninstalling, reinstalling & re-activating Office may be required, but you should try just repairing & re-activating Office first. All existing settings will be preserved.
Re 3?: You don't need to uninstall Office to download the backup copy. If a repair doesn't work, though, you'll need to uninstall then reinstalling Office. If Office remains un-activated after that, you'll need to & re-activate it, too.

Your screenshot is too small for me to see any meaningful detail. Presumably there's an activation message on the title bar that accounts for the red colouring.

As an example, for Outlook it says: Inbox - Outlook - Microsoft Outlook (Activation Failed)

Well, that should be clear enough as to what why the title bar is red...

I honestly don't remember Iain, it was over a year ago. But I may have some notes somewhere in one of my binders, I shall look but it may take some time. I got in the habit years ago of taking notes as I do installs, upgrades and repairs, then when things break they usually help with a solution.

Microsoft don't understand that many people still use older apps and software, so they turn off activation servers after a few years, then their attitude is screw the users, buy a new version. With many apps like some Adobe ones you can download older releases with a special Key that will activate the app without the activation server. If one tries to re-install from original discs they will not activate. Been there done that got the scars and the tee shirt.

BTW, I still have dual boot Dell 755 PC with XP and 7. I boot to XP when I want to run apps from the 80s that are no longer available or compatible. It works fine, a little slow by today's standards but I am in no rush to get to my funeral either.

Don't hold your breath though, I'll do my best.

When I carefully checked my list of installed apps, I saw that Office 2010 showed that it was installed twice. I uninstalled the one with the wrong key and cleaned up junk files and registry entries then rebooted and found Office 2010 was now activated.

I "solved" the problem by registering for an Office 365 account, which finally -for now- allowed me to redeem the product code (for Office for Mac 2011), and then Now Word, Excel and PowerPoint will allow me - for now - to save changes and create new files. The most helpful Help page was:
Activate Office for Mac 2011 - Office Support
with which I 'signed in to an existing Office 365 subscription'.

It's hardly surprising a solution for Office 2010 doesn't work on a Mac. Aside from the fact Office 2010 was never offered for the Mac platform, the Windows & Mac operating systems are entirely different... Your issue seems to have been that you were running a trial version (probably expired) of Office.
