I'm well aware of the difference between Windows and Mac operating systems, thanks. I posted the "solution" for (Home & Student) Office for Mac 2011 , which I legally purchased online (it's not a trial version), since it might also work for users of Office for Windows 2010 who don't wish, or need, to upgrade. (I knew I didn't have multiple installations, so MB300E!'s solution wasn't going to work.)

The problem is not the vintage of the software (8 years is not a lot for those of us who first used Word in the early 1980s) but the difficulty in getting Microsoft's servers to recognise product keys for releases which are no longer supported.

I have three install discs for Office 2010 Pro, all were full install not trial types. Two were dual install and one was single. I must have marked the boxes incorrectly as to which was used on which PC/Laptop.

That's not an issue going back even as far as Office 97... Microsoft continues to recognise valid product keys for all of its products, whatever their age.

It is now.

I am currently unable to even open any legal Office for Mac 2011 products without either purchasing either an Office 365 account (75 pounds Sterling pa, repeating regardless of usage) or upgrading to a more recent Office for Mac release (which, in turn, will become 'unsupported' and extort a by then increased 365 subscription).

*Helpful* advice and information is welcome, not claims that this is not an issue. I've been an Office (initially Word) for both Windows and Mac for decades.

Maybe you need to uninstall & reinstall Office, which is the normal way of repairing broken Office apps on Macs... Unless your product key was a pirated one, it should still be accepted. Office 2011 still runs on Macs. Evidently, though, you've unwisely installed a trial copy of Office 365 over that and the trial has now expired. In that case, it's Office 365 you'll need to uninstall, then reinstall Office 2011 - assuming Office 2011 meets your needs; otherwise, take out an Office 365 subscription.

You still don't understand what this is about. What I 'maybe need' to do is to purchase the next or next plus one single-license release of Office for Mac, having first uninstalled the one which Microsoft refuses to let me use because of their 'pay yearly for Office 365 or we'll stop you using your older version' policy. Before I do that I'll need to do some careful research into (a) how to completely get rid of the older version, (b) what damage the new(er) version might do to support files (e.g. Custom Dictionary) which I've built up over many years.

Help with side effects of uninstallation and new installation are welcome. If the best you can do is to parrot phrases like 'the normal way of repairing broken Office apps on Macs', or copy-pasting online text pages without reading what people have written, thanks Micropops but don't bother.

And if all you can do is make snide comments, go away. Thread closed.
