Question Anyone figure out how to use old Microsoft Ofc program on new computer?

My old laptop died so I bought a new laptop. I installed my old 2003 Microsoft Office Professional Suite on it, but when I try to use it, a huge message pops up prompting me to activate Microsoft 365. Evidently new computers come loaded with all the Microsoft products, but if you don't activate them, they DISABLE all the work you've created in the past with any program in their suite. You can't edit them, you can't copy them, you can't do much of anything with them. Doesn't matter if you created them 10 years ago.

I do not want Microsoft 365! I do not want to rent their programs. I purchased the 2003 version, I know it, I like it, I do not need the latest and greatest--especially now that I'm retired and use my computer strictly for personal use.

Has anyone else encountered this situation? More importantly, has anyone figured out how to stop the activation message and use the programs they've already purchased?

Smile Thank you, thank you, and thank you again!!!!

You are an Angel! Thank you so much! I've printed out those instructions, but I think I'll call our computer guy (works out of his home) and have him read the instructions and proceed with the fix. I'm too afraid to give it a try on my own and possibly destroying something.

I once worked in an office where an employee was fiddling around with her mouse while she was on the telephone. Without realizing it, she'd clicked on a program file, highlighting it and somehow dumping it somewhere else--no idea where it ended up, but she pretty much turned her computer into a plastic box with family photos perched on top of it. The only fix was to have the computer tech company come in and reload her computer, losing files in the process. It was an absolute nightmare!

Again, thank you so very much for your help!!!!

Simply uninstall whatever Office 365 components are installed, then install Office 2003. Do note, however, that, even though you may be able to install it and get it running, Microsoft warns that Office 2003 - which is no longer supported, anyway - is not compatible with Windows 10.

Unhappy Rats. Just when I thought I could be at peace with Microsoft

Oh my gosh, just when I think I'm going to be back in control of my computer/MS Office Suite, I learn from your reply that I'm not. I'm not sure if I hate my new computer now which has stuck me with Windows 10 or if I just hate Microsoft...arrrgh. I'm 68 years old and only use their suite of programs for fun. Frankly, now that I'm kicked back and retired, I don't want to learn new applications or understand what the hell cloud storage is--and when I'm writing to a friend at 3 a.m. because I can't sleep, I sure as heck don't want to collaborate with anyone. I just want to use what I have and already know. I sat in front of a computer working for over 40 years and now that I'm finally retired, I want to play outside!

I kind of picture Microsoft as a huge store. I hate shopping--I want to get in, go to the aisles I know to grab what I need and get out of the store so I can go do fun things. But Microsoft keeps rearranging its aisles and moving its products around, changing packaging, etc. They want to keep me in their store, wandering around, trying to figure out their new stuff, etc. By the time I get out of their store (or learn their new products/looks/etc.) I'm exhausted and I don't want to play anymore.

I just want to write a letter to my friend and send her photos of my garden and tell her what ratio of fertilizer is needed per square foot (calculated with my knowledge and use of Excel)--which, by the way, I won't even be able to afford new plants OR fertilizer if I sign up for their ridiculous rental fees!

Am I allowed to say that I truly, vehemently hate the new Microsoft rental package ideas which, to my way of thinking are sort of like those gang neighborhood protection thugs you've read about? You pay them or else Microsoft will incapacitate all the work you've created--sort of like the thugs who will take a baseball bat to your kneecaps if you don't pay?

I totally understand if you need to delete my ranting post so no worries about that. I just needed to rant about Microsoft to someone who would understand. So thank you for listening.

Aside from interface changes, which will take some getting used to, Office Home & Student 2016 (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) or Office 365 Home & Business 2016 (includes Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and OneNote) would probably meet your needs. Unlike the other flavours of Office 365, these are a one-off purchase and don't require an internet connection.

Mind you, renting Office 365 Personal (includes Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype) would take 2-3 years before it costs as much as a one-time purchase of Office Home & Student 2016 or Office 365 Home & Business 2016, plus MS keeps updating it with functionality.
