Default Lost Office 2016 and Office 2010 following Windows 10 crash

Hi, my first post.
My laptop (Acer Aspire 5742, 500GB, 4GB DDR3, i5 proc.) crashed 3 days ago after installing MySQL Installer (incl. Visual Studio 2015 & Python), and Windows 10 would not re-start (I've been running Windows 10 for over 6 months). I finally got it running but neither Word 2016 or Excel 2016 load, despite still having the icons in Start menu. I also had MS Office Professional 2010, but Word 2010 will (also) not load.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2j2az8atmw...Progs.JPG?dl=0

I am not sure if I had Office 2016, or if Word/Excel 2016 came under Office 365 suite - see snip, above.
When Windows 10 returned, I noticed an install of Office 2010 was taking place, which I cancelled. Later, I used Windows Settings to install a KB3213986 update that had failed before the crash. I don't know why my office applications no longer work. Any suggestions?

Update:
I was able to open an existing Excel file by using "Open with" (on right-click of file) but there were two icons (2010 and 2016 Excel), both with "Excel 2016" written beside them, so I still think all is not well. Perhaps there is a way to refresh/repair the 2010 and 2016 versions of MS Office?

Unless you use Office 2010, I'd suggest uninstalling it via the Control Panel. Then repair the Office 2016 installation (also via the Control Panel). If you use both, repair both - Office 2010, then Office 2016.

Hi Paul. Thanks for your attention.
I have kept Office 2010 until I completely trust Office 2016 (I do like the added features though). Also, Word/Excel 2016 take about 10 seconds to load, whereas the 2010 versions are almost instant, so I use 2010 when rushed. Thinking of off-loading the 2010 version though.
How do I "repair" the applications?
Geoff.

Also, I am not sure where the Office 2016 suite existed: was it Office 365 Pro Plus? (Sorry, I've been subsumed by a research M.Sc. over last two years- a lot of things have passed me by in the meantime)

You can repair the Office installation via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair.

I have two installations of MS Office Professional 2010 (see link) and MS Office 365 Pro Plus.
Do you know if Word/Excel 2016 are with the 365 Pro Plus, and
which 2010 version do I repair?

Apologies for my ignorance.
Geoff

It looks like you might originally have had an Office Professional 2010 installation that at some stage got 'upgraded' to Office Professional 2010 Plus (perhaps as part of an Office 365 subscription?) but without the Office Professional 2010 installation being replaced. If so, that might mean you actually have two Office 2010 installations to repair. I doubt you need both.

My inclination would be to uninstall Office Professional 2010, then repair Office Professional 2010 Plus. You might also need to have it reinstall any Office 2010 apps that you lose via the Office Professional 2010 uninstallation. Then repair Office 365.

My mistake (it's been a long weekend). I found original emails for the MS Office Professional Plus 2010, and Project Professional 2010, the latter I have a working Key for, so only one full version (Word,Excel,Access) of Office 2010 was installed. Leave it with me, and many thanks for your help. Once I have it all repaired or fixed, I will mark as solved (if I can find the button!).

Hi again. Thanks for previous help. As part of rejuvenating my laptop following a BSoD two weeks ago, I am close to re-installing Windows 10. I have read that it is best to have MS Office in place first.

To re-cap, I have the following programs installed:
  • MS Office Pro Plus 2010 Ver: 14.0.7015.1000
  • MS Office 365 Pro Plus -en-us Ver: 16.0.7571.2109
  • MS Project Professional Ver: 14.0.7015.1000 - I'm not sure what this is, and only activated it recently
I am not too concerned with Project Professional, but I would ideally like to get full functionality from the first two. For the past two weeks, Word won't open at all and Excel (Office 365) has worked sometimes, but not now. I have been guided through malware removal this last few days (Conduit, Gong etc) and is ongoing.

Following @macropods advice, I tried repairing MS Office Pro Plus 2010, but received the message: "..product installation has been corrupted. Run Setup agian....".
I also tried uninstalling Office 365 via Control Panel, but after leaving on overnight, the un-installation process was stuck on Stage 1 of 4: I had to power down the laptop to stop the attempted un-installation.

I would like to have fresh installations of MS Office 365 Pro Plus and, if possible, MS Office Pro Plus 2010. I have the product key for the latter, and I have Office 365 via my college, which is allowed to be installed on 5 pc's, so I should be okay to re-install it (I hope).

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Geoff

Evidently, whatever happened when you tried installing MySQL Installer seriously corrupted your system; a complete Windows reinstall may be required.

Whether you do so before reinstalling Windows or afterwards, you will need to obtain the installation files for Office 2010, Project 2010 and Office 365. Even before doing any reinstallation work, you will need to make a complete backup of all your data files; otherwise they will be forever erased by the reinstall. Your college should be able to provide the required links/media for Office 365. Presumably, Project was supplied on a DVD, which you'll need for reinstallation. You can get a Microsoft Office 2010 backup download from:

Thanks again Paul. Yes, I agree regarding fresh Windows 10 install.
I have backed up all my files, and made a System Image back-up. All malware has now been removed, so I may make a fresh System Image backup (took 4 hours the last time).
Although the un-installation of Office 365 appeared to be stuck on stage 1 of 4 (overnight), I don't see it listed in installed programs any more. Through my college Outlook account (and My Account), I am presently re-installing Office 365, though it has been "stuck" at around the 95% mark for the past hour (the first 95% took about an hour). I will be patient though.
Task Manager, Processes shows MS Windows Search Filter Host and MS Windows Search Indexer as the top two CPU processes (Search Protocol Host is up there too), while Firefox (32 bit), MS Windows Search Indexer and Service Host Local System (Network Restricted) (9) as the top three Memory processes.

I have traced the product key for Office Home and Student 2010 and a receipt (and On the Hub link) for the upgrade to Office Pro Plus 2010, so I should be okay to re-install.

Just as an update, and to conclude: I completely removed Office 365 and Office Professional Pro 2010 with the Easy fix tool supplied by Microsoft:

https://support.office.com/en-ie/art...c-2fdf5dbf61d8

This worked smoothly, after failed attempts via Control Panel.

After backing up my files to an external hard drive, I re-installed Windows 10 Pro, which deleted all my folders/files, as expected. Installation and updates took close to three hours, over Wifi.
I then re-installed Office 365 (64-bit) via my Office 365 college account which took around 25 minutes. In the process of copying back the files I need, and all is working smoothly: Excel, Word etc.

Thanks for your help and advice Paul.
Regards,
Geoff
