email file attachments with non-latin characters in file name
when I have a document open in Word, and I email it directly from Word, this works fine as long as my default email client is Outlook.
But if I use any other email client, I run into problems when the file name is in Hebrew. The file name is not rendered correctly, and comes out in meaningless characters, like this: ׳›׳•׳×׳¨׳•׳× ׳ ׳*׳’׳ ׳™׳×.doc This issue arises only when emailing directly from Word. If I save the file to my desktop, and right-click it, and choose send to/mail recipient, the file name is rendered correctly. |

ma shlomha!
The problem is probably due to the email app's incorrectly parsing non-ASCII characters when emailing directly from Word, with the result that only one byte of each double-byte character (which is what Hebrew characters are) is output. Why they would only fail when emailing directly from Word is odd. That said, just in case there's a fault on the Office side of things, you could try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair).

thanks.
I have a standard US english installation of office, and on top of that I have a hebrew language pack. when I look in "programs and features" I see, strangely enough, that both are 956 mb. funny that a language pack is the same size as an entire office installation. Is this normal, and is it perhaps connected to my problem? maybe I should uninstall, and then install a hebrew version of office instead, if I can get one? but then, will I have an option for english interface (which I need), or will I be back to two installations of office, one on top of the other? |

Presumably, if you installed a Hebrew version (assuming there is one), you'd then need to install and English-language pack, so you'd be in much the same position as you're now in.

I found that the send to mail function works, and properly renders hebrew file names. So that would indicate the problem is with Word, not with my email client. I am using Affixa, it sends to Gmail (or other web-based email services). But I had the very same problem with thunderbird, eMclient, and another one, I think mailbird. All of them, when receiving a command from Word, failed to properly render hebrew file names. I have my windows system locale for non-unicode programs set to hebrew israel, so that's not the problem. Any settings I can change in Word? |

In the cross-post, you mentioned having tried an Office repair, but with no effect, so we can rule that out. Try running Word in safe mode and seeing whether that makes a difference. If so, an errant add-in is likely to be the cause.

I wasn't referring to starting Windows in safe mode but starting Word in safe mode. You do that by holding down the Ctrl key while starting Word.

OK, maybe there's a bug in Word 2016 - it wouldn't be the first one...

maybe there is some setting in office 2016 that I can change. How could I find out about that, without cross-posting?

There is no objection, per se, to cross-posting; all that is asked is that you provide links on all forums concerned when you do so.
Regardless, there is no 'setting' in Word 2016 to turn the errant email behaviour you've experienced on/off.
