How to call up "Recovered Files" on demand
So this is really applicable in several Office programs, but let's say I am working on several documents, and Word/Excel/Powerpoint crashes. I reopen the program, and there on the left is a link to "Recovered Files".
However, once I open up one of these files and close the recovery pane, it's gone again until I completely shut down the program and re-open. Is there a way for me to call up the "Recovered Files" pane on demand? I feel like I've searched pretty thoroughly, and I can't believe that nobody at Microsoft ever thought to build in this basic functionality. Btw, I'm talking about Word 2013/2016 - I don't remember what "recovered files" looked like in earlier versions. |

Have you considered using, for example, File>Recent>Recover Unsaved Documents/Workbooks/Presentations?

I think you'll find it's always there...

Not quite sure what to make of that statement...I'm not lying, if that's what you're suggesting. I know exactly what you're talking about, the "Recover Unsaved Presentations" button. And I'm telling you that at least 40% of the time or so, it's not present at the bottom of my recent files list when it should be.
It sounds like if it is always there, then perhaps my Office install is corrupted. Maybe I'll try a reinstall. That would have been a much more helpful recommendation from you. |

There was no suggestion of lying - and I don't know where you'd get that idea. The simple fact is the option is displayed even when there are no files for it recover.
As for reinstalling Office, that rarely achieves anything a repair won't.

Anyways, for some reason, the "Recover Documents" button is in fact not always showing up at the bottom of my screen, and I haven't really been able to find anyone else having this problem. Despite the potential futility, I am going to try reinstalling Office over the weekend and see if that fixes it. |

If you haven't already tried it, I really do suggest you try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change>Repair). As I said, reinstalling Office rarely achieves anything a repair won't. Repairing might also resolve the crash issues.
I'd also recommend setting the autosave frequency for each app to a suitable minimum (I use a 1min frequency and find it has little impact on performance!). You might also try breaking large files (especially Word documents) into smaller ones (e.g. on a Chapter basis). Aside from the fact they'll perform better, you'll have less work at risk in the event of a crash. They can be recombined in various ways when you're done editing.
