Question Problem with repeated "Configuring Microsoft Office 2010" messages.

I am trying to resolve a PC problem for a relative. He is running Windows 7 and MS Office 2010 - I believe that both are the 64 bit versions.

Pretty much whenever he presses a key in MS Office 2010 the following MsgBox appears:
"Please wait while setup prepares the necessary files"
Followed in quick succession without intervention from him by:
"Configuring Microsoft Preofessional 2010"
At this point he hits the Red X "Close" button and it asks:
"Are you sure you want to cancel setup?"
Sometimes he gets a MsgBox reading:
"In order to complete setup a system reboot is necessary. Would you like to reboot now?"
Regardless of whether or not he reboots, the problem persists.

If he allows it to run to completion it reboots the PC but reappears when he opens Outlook again. This also happens with Word and Excel.

He has had (and used) MS Office 2010 for about five years - so for quite some time. This problem started about a month ago. First he thought it was just 'updating' things - but then it just went on and on.

He has Googled the problem and attempted the KB 2528748 Microsoft Support fix without any joy. He has also tried running CCleaner.

Can anyone offer any ideas as to how he can get round this wretched situation? I have suggested that he should stop using MS Office and instead use Apache's OpenOffice or LibreOffice but having used MS Office for more than 25 years he still manages to swear by (rather than at) Microsoft.

TIA

Has anyone tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change)?

Go to My Computer. On the top menu, click Uninstall or change a program. Now find Microsoft Office 2010 in the programs list. Right-click it once and click Change. You can now repair Microsoft Office installation.

Hope this would be helpful.

Thanks and best regards.
I am not sure quite how this would help, what exactly is the User supposed to be "changing"

Under 'Change' you'll find the 'Repair' option.

He has now tried that . . .

Goes all the way, says it is "repairing the problem" then gets to the end and says the process was unsuccessful . . .

Where to next

In that case, you may need to ininstall, then reinstall Office.

I am concerned about the risk of his losing all his emails, Contacts, etc. and particularly his SMTP login details if he uninstalls and then reinstalls a clean version of Office 2010.

What is a 100% reliable way of backing up and restoring these details without simply reintroducing the current problem?

Would backing up and restoring the .PST file suffice?

Uninstalling & reinstalling shouldn't affect any data files, including templates. What it should do, however, is replace any faulty application files & restore damaged registry settings that a repair might miss. That said, it's wise to make backups of your data on a regular basis and especially before major system changes such as this.

Your backup software should have settings to use for ensuring folders containing Outlook files and the like are backed up. By Default Outlook.pst is located in:
C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outloo k
