Default office 2010 installing to the dvd volume and error 1325

Office 2010 install errors:

When installing from the DVD, regardless of where I tell it to install, it always gives me a no disk space error on drive D:, which happens to be the DVD drive itself. Of course there is no space there, why won't it install to C: or E: when I point it there?

When I mount the disc image as an iso, the install fails out the gate again, only this time it is Error 1325 message: "dataservices is not a valid short name".

I've googled my face of on this one. No solution. I did read one forum which suggested reinstalling windows installer 3.2, but when I try to install that, there is no disc space available either.

I've tried creating a 2nd admin user and installing it under that account to see if it was a user related problem, but no dice.

Other things I've tried:
Completely removing everything office related that has been on my pc before (I had a failed office 2010 install that I never dealt with from 2 years ago, and was running office 2007 prior to this) and this includes using the "ripoutoffice2007" and "completelyremoveoffice2010"utilities that have been circulated on the web

changing the value of IRPstack registry as was suggested for users experiencing 1325 errors on other installs.

Still no dice.
I know it is not the installer, because it just installed on my other laptop (i tested it)

Any clues?
Thanks in advance

Your description suggests a faulty Windows installation and/or a rogue background app that's redirecting the install.
