Default Lost photo content after rotating photos using MS Picture Manager

I've lost photo content after rotating photos using MS Office Picture Manager, Office 2010, Windows 7. I've seen other posts on this topic, where the problem was related to using McAfee, but I don't use McAfee. I rotated the photos using the rotate button at the top of the screen. I moved from photo to photo using the right arrow on my keyboard, and closed and saved the changes. When I reopened the folder, all the photos I rotated have only a box with the photo image number, and a small red X in the box. When I right click to see properties, it says there are no photo properties, and the size of the file is 0 kb. Did the files get corrupted during the rotate operation? Are the photos lost? Is there a way to recover them? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your description suggests some system corruption, or a rogue background app, has cause you rotated image content to be lost. You may be able to recover them via Windows Explorer, by right-clicking on the images and choosing Properties>Previous versions.

Note also that if these changes were made to images that were on USB drives at the time (I note your current path doesn't indicate that), it's quite possible the data were corrupted because someone removed the drive before the updates had been written to it (e.g. by not going through the 'safe remove' process).
