License and Activation, General... Plus, can Office 2000 read/edit Office 2003 files?
About the "Licensed for installation on up to 3 computers"...
Does that mean (A) Office can be activated on only "3 computers at one time", such that the activations could be "deactivated" and reused, or (B) Office can be activated on only 3 computers, total, then becomes inactive? Can Office 2000 read and edit files created on Office 2003? Thanks... |

Office is not licensed for up to three computers.
You need to check out the "Product Use Rights" for your particular version of Office. Normally you are only allowed to use the product on one desktop and one portable device. And these must be used by the same user. Here is the PUR for Office 2007: Quote:
You can also find the licensing terms for older products using the link on the left side of the page called "Product List Archive." As for Office 2000 reading Office 2003 files. I believe it is possible. Although reading Office 2007 files requires the download of the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Last edited by kfawcett; 09-24-2009 at 06:01 PM. |

Thanks for the reply and the info. However, some versions of office I believe, can be installed on "up to 3 PCs"... large green label on the box states it.
Being able to "reassign the software to another computer"... do you know offhand the details of doing that? Does the licensed user have to do it from the "licensed device" or is there an alternative way? Thanks. |

I'm sorry I can not find anything on the product use rights for Office 2000. So if you say that it states 3 computers, then you should be OK.
(A) Office can be activated on only "3 computers at one time", such that the activations could be "deactivated" and reused. Just uninstall from the old machine and install on the new one. Yes, Office 2000 can open and edit Office 2003 files. The major change in Office happened with Office 2007 with the docx file format. If you want Office 2000, XP, or 2003 to open and edit 2007 docx files, then you will need the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Last edited by kfawcett; 09-24-2009 at 06:01 PM. |

Thanks. Actually, some versions of Office 2000 didn't require activation... those prior to "SR-1", I think it was called.
Offhand, I can recall Office Home and Student, Office Student and Teacher, and maybe others... some versions have a 3-PC license. You've been a big help. :>) |

Seems you'd have to use the Activation Wizard or something online with MS to let them know it's being taken off of your rig and is therefore eligible to be installed on another.... ??? |

There is a set number of times that a key can be activated, it is more than the amount of machines you are allowed to install from your license. If you uninstall and then reinstall on another machine, and after you enter the product key you end up having a problem with activation, you can call Microsoft Product Activation and explain your situation. They will be able to help get you software working.
Here is how to get the number for Microsoft Product Activation. Phone numbers vary depending on the version and region you are in, so you have to follow the process below. Quote:

"... When you enter your valid Product Key, the Activation Wizard starts automatically..."
Can you select the Activation Wizard to get a phone number at any time, besides when it "starts automatically"? Sorry to sound dense, but I've never activated a Microsoft product... I've always had OEM stuff or other which didn't require activation. |
