Default License and Activation, General... Plus, can Office 2000 read/edit Office 2003 files?

About the "Licensed for installation on up to 3 computers"...

Does that mean (A) Office can be activated on only "3 computers at one time", such that the activations could be "deactivated" and reused, or (B) Office can be activated on only 3 computers, total, then becomes inactive?

Can Office 2000 read and edit files created on Office 2003?

Thanks...

Office is not licensed for up to three computers.

You need to check out the "Product Use Rights" for your particular version of Office. Normally you are only allowed to use the product on one desktop and one portable device. And these must be used by the same user.

Here is the PUR for Office 2007:

Quote:
A. General License Terms. You have the rights below for each license you acquire.

I) Installation and Use Rights.

  1. Licensed Device. Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to one device (physical hardware system). That device is the "licensed device." A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.
    • You may install and use any number of copies of the software and of any prior version of the software on the licensed device.
    • Except as described in the Remote Access section below, only one user may use the copies on the licensed device at a time.
    • You may reassign a license, but not on a short-term basis (i.e., not within 90 days of the last assignment). If you reassign a license, the device to which you reassign the license becomes the new licensed device for that license.
  2. Portable Device. You may install a copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
  3. Network Device. You may also install additional copies on a network device. You may only use those copies as described in the Remote Access section below.
II) Additional Licensing Requirements and/or Use Rights.

  1. Remote Access. You may access and use the software remotely from another device as described below.
    • Primary user. The single primary user of the device hosting the remote desktop session may access and use the software remotely from any other device. No other person may use the software under the same license at the same time except to provide support services.
    • Non-primary users. Any user may access and use the software remotely from a separately licensed device.
    • Remote assistance. You may allow other devices to access the software to provide you with support services. You do not need additional licenses for this access.
  2. Media Elements and Templates. You may copy and use images, clip art, animations, sounds, music, shapes, video clips and templates provided with the software and identified for such use in documents and projects that you create. You may distribute those documents and projects non commercially. If you wish to use these media elements or templates for any other purpose, go to www.microsoft.com/permission to learn whether that use is allowed.
For all current Microsoft products, you can go here to look up the licensing terms for your application.

You can also find the licensing terms for older products using the link on the left side of the page called "Product List Archive."

As for Office 2000 reading Office 2003 files. I believe it is possible. Although reading Office 2007 files requires the download of the
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack

Thanks for the reply and the info. However, some versions of office I believe, can be installed on "up to 3 PCs"... large green label on the box states it.

Being able to "reassign the software to another computer"... do you know offhand the details of doing that? Does the licensed user have to do it from the "licensed device" or is there an alternative way?

Thanks.

I'm sorry I can not find anything on the product use rights for Office 2000. So if you say that it states 3 computers, then you should be OK.

(A) Office can be activated on only "3 computers at one time", such that the activations could be "deactivated" and reused. Just uninstall from the old machine and install on the new one.

Yes, Office 2000 can open and edit Office 2003 files. The major change in Office happened with Office 2007 with the docx file format. If you want Office 2000, XP, or 2003 to open and edit 2007 docx files, then you will need the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack

Thanks. Actually, some versions of Office 2000 didn't require activation... those prior to "SR-1", I think it was called.

Offhand, I can recall Office Home and Student, Office Student and Teacher, and maybe others... some versions have a 3-PC license.

You've been a big help. :>)

How would MS Update know to record your key as being "deactivated" on a computer if you simply uninstalled it from your machine?

Seems you'd have to use the Activation Wizard or something online with MS to let them know it's being taken off of your rig and is therefore eligible to be installed on another.... ???

There is a set number of times that a key can be activated, it is more than the amount of machines you are allowed to install from your license. If you uninstall and then reinstall on another machine, and after you enter the product key you end up having a problem with activation, you can call Microsoft Product Activation and explain your situation. They will be able to help get you software working.

Here is how to get the number for Microsoft Product Activation. Phone numbers vary depending on the version and region you are in, so you have to follow the process below.

Quote:
Activate over the Internet or by phone

When you enter your valid Product Key, the Activation Wizard starts automatically and gives you two choices on how to proceed:
  • Activate by using the Internet The Activation Wizard automatically contacts the Microsoft licensing servers through your Internet connection. If you are using a valid Product Key that has not already been used for the allowed number of installations, your product is activated immediately. When you activate through the Internet, your product ID (derived from the installation Product Key) is sent to Microsoft. A response (the confirmation ID) is sent back to your computer to activate your product. If you choose to activate your product through the Internet and you are not already connected, the wizard alerts you that there is no connection.
  • Activate by using the telephone You can telephone an Activation Center and activate your product with the help of a customer service representative.
Important Telephone contact numbers vary by license and country/region. In step 2 of the Activation Wizard, use the number provided to call the Microsoft Activation Center. Activation Center telephone numbers are not listed in this article because the correct number for you is based on several factors. Microsoft software can be obtained under various licenses, including individual retail licenses, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses, and volume licenses, so it is important that you use the number indicated by the Activation Wizard.
Telephone activation might take longer than activation through the Internet. You should be at your computer when you call, and you should have your software Product Key available.
    1. In the Activation Wizard, select the country/region where you reside and where you plan to use the product. The wizard provides one or more telephone numbers appropriate for your selection. Use the number provided on your Activation Wizard screen to call the Microsoft Activation Center.
    2. Call the Activation Center. The customer service representative asks you for your installation ID (displayed on your screen) and other relevant information. After your installation ID is verified, you receive a confirmation ID.
    3. In the Activation Wizard, type the confirmation ID in the spaces provided at the bottom of the screen, and then press ENTER.

"... When you enter your valid Product Key, the Activation Wizard starts automatically..."

Can you select the Activation Wizard to get a phone number at any time, besides when it "starts automatically"?

Sorry to sound dense, but I've never activated a Microsoft product... I've always had OEM stuff or other which didn't require activation.
