Default Error 1935 on Re-Installing MS Office Prof 2007

OK, Microsoft Experts, Here's a Mystery

My wife had trouble with Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Word and Publisher. They did not operate at all. Not being able to solve her problem either, I suggested that she uninstall and reinstall Office (even though Excel and PowerPoint were still working fine). She got an error message when uninstalling, but C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office contails only 26.5 MB (in 2 folders and 12 files), so I surmise that the uninstallation mostly worked). To be clear, I am trying to reinstall the same MS Office software on the same computer as before. All the legalities are on the up-and-up.

Here's the problem I get in trying to install. At first, it began as expected, with the green bar showing completion creeping across from left to right. Then it quit with this window showing:

I go to the MS online support site. There, I meet with one of Microsoft's carefully crafted tricks. First, I choose "Office 2007 Solution Center." Then, I pick "Contacts." Then, "Contact a support professional by e-mail, online, or phone." I choose "Microsoft Office Professional 2007 (All languages)." I enable the "I use it for my own personal use" radio button and then <Continue>. That brings up the "Select a support topic," where I choose "INSTALLATION AND SETUP" and "Single license" as the sub-topic. Selecting <continue> leads me to the "Provide product ID - to determine if no-charge support is available, provide the product identitification number." Since my wife has bought both Microsoft Office and Microsoft Vista, I sort of hope that MS's help in making Office work the way it's supposed to won't cost a lot of extra money. So I try typing all the numbers and alphanumeric combinations which I find on the exterior of the plastic store-bought case containing the installation discs. Each time, I get scolded that the entry I have made is not in the correct format. So what is the correct number of the product which I need to type? I look on the first SETUP disc, where there is a "Readme.htm" file. If Microsoft wanted me to be able to know my Product ID without being able to install the program, isn't this a likely place where they could put it for me? But no, there is no product ID in the Readme file. Back on the "Provide product ID" page, there is a hyperlink to "How to find your product identitification number." When I click on it, I am sent to a page telling me how to locate my PID. It begins by my clicking on the "Office" hyperlink. It tells me to "Click the Microsoft Office Button," which, of course, DOES NOT EXIST ON THE COMPUTER because Office hasn't installed from the disc the way it should have. So after all this, Microsoft has led me through a many-step process only to trap me in this Catch-22 cycle. One cannot tell whether one must pay for MS help in overcoming an error in installation of Office because one cannot read the PID code, because MS has hidden it within the installed part of a program which cannot install. Is it any wonder that so many people these days scratch their heads after grumbling at Microsoft over and over and say to themselves, "Well, maybe I should try Linux for a while"?

I look forward to whatever you may recommend for me to try to recover my wife's Office Programs.

(As you can see, I tried to draw the two windows with clever +++ outllines, but the forum autoformatting eliminated many instances of more than one consecutive space. I'm sorry it doesn't look as pretty, here.)

Thank you

Let's reclassify this as "solved."

As soon as I left msofficeforums.com and did a Google search, I found that may others had encountered this problem and that solutions were offered by some, including one MS Knowledge Base article. I'll go back to those, but thanks for letting me post. If the editors wish to delete this thread, I have no objections.

Thank you
