Default Post Windows 8.1

Hello. I have Office Professional Plus 2010. After Windows forced the install of 8.1 from the 8.1 Preview I had been using, I had to re-install everything. This wasn't much of a problem, just an inconvenience. One of the issues that hasn't resolved is Office.

Every time I try to open a document (Word and Excel are what I use) the document loads up. What also loads is the "Microsoft Office Activation Wizard".
It tells me that my version is not activated, and furthermore it "...is designed for corporate or institutional customers. Connect your computer to your corporate network to complete activation."

I believe I purchased this version of Office through my work at a reduced price because of a purchase agreement with my work and Microsoft or something. I would have been given a link to download the software and a key. Regardless, it was several years ago and I don't recall. And I can't find the email for it, either.

I am given an opportunity in the Activation Wizard to Change Product Key. That's all I can report.

Does anyone know what to do? This was working perfectly prior to 8.1's turnover from Preview. Please help!

If this was done as part of a corporate licence, your employer should be able to provide the Product Key.

BTW, a Windows upgrade is not compulsory nor does it normally delete other application's files. Your description suggests there was something seriously wrong with your Windows/Office installation beforehand.

No, it was this thing that Windows 8 had a Windows 8.1 Preview. I got notice that Windows 8.1 Preview would be forced to Windows 8.1 on January 15th. I didn't think anything of it, until I found out that I had to re-install everything. Rather than type it myself, here's from Microsoft's website:

"Thank you for using Windows 8.1 Preview. The preview is no longer available for download, and the license for it expires January 15, 2014. If you have not yet installed the final version of Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, you should do so now.

"If you are still running Windows 8.1 Preview, you'll see the following notification every time you sign in. After January 15, 2014, your PC will also restart every 2 hours and you will lose any unsaved data."

So I had to install the final version or restart the PC every two hours. I did that about twice before I said, "Okay, let's update." Little did I know that Office would lose the key.

Also, one more thing. My employer doesn't have the product key. See, I am in the United States Air Force. The entire Department of Defense uses Microsoft products.

As a special deal, Microsoft periodically sells their Office suite to military members for their home use on an individual basis for a substantially discounted price.

I purchased it from Microsoft, using a special link emailed to my military account (an email I deleted long, long ago). I forwarded the link to my home account (also I deleted that email) and installed the software. Everything happened years ago, and there is no longer a record. Nor can I go to the Microsoft page I went to, since I don't know what it was, how to get there, or if it even still exists.

The key exists somewhere on this computer. I don't know how to find it.

So how did Windows 8 - or the preview - even get onto the computer? These things don't just happen of their own accord.

As for Office, what version are you being prompted to activate? The fact you've been playing around with Windows 8 suggests it might be Office 2013/365. See also: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/su...104172018.aspx

The computer came with Windows 8. I did not like it very much, and found that Windows 8.1 Preview was available from Microsoft. I installed it and was happy with it. The 8.1 Preview, as the notice said, was pushed over into 8.1 (minus the preview) on January 15.

I am trying to re-activate Office Professional Plus 2010.

So Office 2010 has never been installed on this laptop?

If you still have the old one, you can retrieve the product key from that using the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

Office Professional Plus 2010 was installed on this PC.

Thanks for the link to the Magic Jelly Bean thing. It worked and I found the key. Opening the Activation Wizard (by opening an Excel document I have) I selected Change Product Key.

I then entered the key found by Magic Jelly Bean. It was validated by the wizard, and I was given the option to install Office. Now, mind you, OFFICE WAS ALREADY INSTALLED. However, I saw no other option. So I selected "Install."

A moment passed, the installation concluded. I then closed Excel, then re-opened it. No change. Same Activation Wizard appeared.

Any thoughts?

So which version of Office are you being asked to activate? Office 2010 or a later version? Did you do the activation using your PC's Administrator account, or another one?

I am being asked to activate Office Professional Plus 2010.

I am not sure whether I activated the product originally with the admin account or not.

Try re-activating from the Admin account. If that fails, you might need to uninstall, then re-install Office.
