Default Log files and not-installed messages?

After doing some research yesterday, I attempted to free up some space on my C Drive by deleting some log and some $Uninstall files. Plenty of sites said this was safe, so I didn't think there would be a problem. At the time, Word was open. After I was done, I restarted my computer.

But when I tried to open word, the blank document came up, but it was immediately followed by an installation thing. Now, I don't have the CD, so I can't reinstall, nor can I repair. And this same thing happens with all other Office programs. After the failed installation, I get the error message about the program not being installed for this user.

For the record, I have tried about every known solution to this error message on the net. I'm pretty sure the key to the problem is a log file, but I don't know which one or where it should go. I have one of those recovery programs, so if I can learn the name soon enough, I might be able to retrieve and restore it. Does anyone know anything about a log file that, if deleted, could cause this problem?
