Confusion over licences
I have been told that if I need to reinstall my £200 single-use Office application on another PC, I'll have to de-register the old one first. But if the PC has totally failed I won't be able to do that and I'm concerned I'll have to pay another £200 for a single-use Office application on the new PC, bringing the total cost to £400. Could someone please clarify or provide an alternative?

There are two separate issues here:
1. You cannot 'deregister' an Office licence registration; 2. In the event that automatic registration fails on the new PC on the grounds that the license is in use, you can revert to telephone activation. You will not be required to purchase Office anew - unless, perhaps, you tried to re-register an Office version for which support is no longer provided. That doesn't apply to Office 2007, however.

Confusion over licences
Thanks, but my concern is with what happens if the old PC has totally failed. I don't want to reinstall Office on that, but on a new PC.

If you new PC has a total failure, you'd presumably want to install Office on a new one; that's where my previous advice comes into play. Provided you've kept a copy of your Office Product Key (and, ideally, the installation files) you should be OK. You don't have to uninstall Office from the failed one and, as I said, there is no 'deregistration' mechanism.
