Install Office 2000 with windows 8. Error 1919
I had Windows 8 installed on my laptop, and my Microsoft Office 2000 ran perfectly. I later reformatted my hard drive, installed Windows 8.1 64 bit & Dell factory installed drivers, but cannot re-install my Microsoft Office 2000 using my installation disk.
Error message 1919. Message: Error configuring ODBC data source. Visual FoxPro Database component not found in registry. Can anyone help me please. Robert |

According to Microsoft, Office 2000 (which hasn't been supported for some years now) is not compatible with Windows 8.

You are getting this error message because following registry subkeys are missing:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ODBC HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC To resolve this problem, you must replace the missing registry keys. However, you may get more serious problem if you modify registry keys incorrectly. Be careful while modifying registry keys. Visit Microsoft website to do this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324520 I would suggest you to use Microsoft Office 2013 with Windows 8. |

Replacing/adding registry keys/sub-keys for an incompatible application doesn't change the fact that it's incompatible. Aside from the fact the incompatibility goes far deeper than just a few registry entries, all "successfully" installing Office 2000 may achieve is introducing other faults into an otherwise stable system.

Thanks, I'm sure you are right. However, if I purchased Office 2010 would that still need the two missing ODBC files?

Sometimes modification in registry keys can resolve these "configuring ODBC data source" errors, i have done it before. Anyways thanks for updating me. I will keep in mind this information, whenever i would suggest solution about this error. ------------ James |

Sure it will 'resolve' the "configuring ODBC data source" errors, but that's not the point. Office 2000's incompatibility with Windows 8 involves a lot more than just a couple of registry entries. All you achieve by adding those is masking the problem at one point and shifting it somewhere else.
