How to convert XML type to Word or Excel

Hi

I downloaded some doc and excel files from work onto an external hard drive and when i plugged my hard drive into my home computer all the file type shows XML. And I cannot open any file. How can i open or view or convert these files into word or excel?

Please help me here as I am very stressed with this.
