Default Denied access to Starter Excel

My computer came with Excel and Word preloaded as Starter mode and I have used both to create hundreds of documents, not all backed up unfortunately.Just after 10 updates were loaded I found I could no longer access Excel. The Excel shortcut icons are now orange and opaque. Message is "The Microsoft office product necessary to open this file is not installed on your computer" Offers 3 alternatives
1. I have already purchased MO; activate button
2 Go online to purchase MO ; purchase button
3 Try MO free for a limited time; try button
1 is no good as it will ask for Reg no which I don't have as it came preloaded
2.I don't want to spend lots of money if I can get Starter back
can anyone help me sort out this horrendous problem?

regards David
