Spell Check
I want to use the Acronym SEH, but it keeps getting changed to SHE, even though I've entered SEH into the custom dictionary. |

Tools/Autocorrect options/Autocorrect. Make the appropriate changes here.

I do not understand the reply. I guess I really am a rank amateur, even though I prepare reports in Word five days a week.

OK. I'm assuming Word 2003. When you've the document open, go to Tools in the bar near the top of the screen - the one that starts off File, Edit, View, etc. Hit Tools, go down dropdown menu to Autocorrect options. Click Autocorrect tab. In the middle of that tab you'll see a box labelled Replace where you can type SEH. This will take you to (in the box below this) where you will see that it's set to change SEH to SHE. Hit delete.
The reason for this Autocorrect function is to try to be helpful and automatically change mistakes. However, like all things, it's not OK some of the time when you want what it sees as a mistake to remain! I hope this is clearer. BTW, if you don't want any autocorrection at all, uncheck the box that says 'Replace text as you type'. In fact, in that area are a whole lot of features that you may or may not want, which can be checked or unchecked. |

Spell Check
Thanks Cryptogram for taking the time to reply, however we are talking about different versions of Word. I use Windows Office XP Version 2002 and it doesn't have Tools in the Tool Bar. I thought my original query was in the Windows XP Office XP section. Sorry if I've confused things.

Now we are talking at cross purposes!. Windows XP is an operating system and as such is not at all the same animal as the actual programs that run within it, such as Word. Your query does not relate to the operating system, but it does to Word, and you have mentioned that you use Word every day at work. The instructions I gave you should work provided you have a Word document open. It's in there that you will find the details that I mention, not in Win XP.
Just to explain further, if you were to use Excel, or Powerpoint, or Photoshop or any other program it would be running within the operating system (OS), in your case WXP. An OS (and there are plenty of alternatives) makes the computer work, but you need actual programs to be able to do the things you want to do (like word-processing, for example). Hope this helps. |
