Default Why when I uninstalled 2013 Office (60-day trial) it also uninstalled my 2010 Office

Installing Windows 8 and actually being excited about the new possibly of the Microsoft family of “Metro” products, I decided to plunge ahead and install the Office 2013 60-Day trial.

All looked great last night under the fog of a few glasses of wine, but upon reflection (mainly 8 hours of sleep) I felt the challenge of all the new Office 13 features & new navigation would be a bridge too far for a short holiday season.

This morning (Monday) being a take charge kinda guy, I promptly uninstalled the 32-bit Office 13 60-day trail and was hoping to get my week started. I quickly found out my 2010 Office Starter products (Word & Excel) were also uninstalled and now Microsoft no longer provides Office 'Starter' support or allows any further downloading of this critical work product, leaving me high and dry on the rocks without the support of a MS spreadsheet tool.

Welcome to my week.

By default, installing a new version of Office removes the old one. When installing, you need to tell the installer to preserve the older version (I haven't tried the Office 2013 installer, so I dont know precisely where this option kicks in). Even so, since only one version of Outlook can be installed, any previous version of that would be removed if you installed Outlok 2013.

Office Starter is available only as preloaded software on certain new PCs - it is not a product you can buy. It appears you can still download it from: http://downloads.pcauthority.com.au/...office_starter

Hi Paul,

The install of the Office 13 32-bit trial version offered no such option of preserving my un"trial" or production version of Office, as you would think by default it must. Conversely the uninstall version offered no chance to "repair" or restore my previously version of Office. Both the install & uninstall fired up & ran smoothly prompting me for input @ no point in either process.

Additionally upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and/or installing & uninstalling the trial version of Office 13 altered my machine's configuration enough so that MS Office "Starter" refuses to re-install (fails repeatedly @ step 3 of 4). Now no MS support for Office "Starter" leaves me out in the cold without a jacket & yes, a very dissatisfied MS OFFICE customer indeed.

In that case, I suggest doing a system restore, to the point immediately before you installed Office 2013.
